Global Citizen: What It’s Like to Be the Only Surgeon in the Middle of a Sudanese War Zone
In 2014, the Mother of Mercy hospital where Tom Catena works was bombed twice.
“It wasn’t a mistake,” he told Global Citizen. “There is nothing else out here, no military target or anything else out here near us. They didn’t miss a barrack or an artillery encampment and accidentally hit us, it was intentional.”
By “here” he means Sudan’s Nuba Mountains, where the government of Sudan and the Sudanese People’s Liberation Movement have been at war since 2011 — and where Catena has served as the only surgeon for nearly a decade.
