Ratiba Ibrahim Kodi is one of the Mother of Mercy Hospital’s first nurses. She has treated the ill and patched together bodies torn apart by shrapnel and fire.
She has known personal tragedy inside the walls of the hospital, losing a newborn son to a congenital heart defect. Like so many in Nuba, she has endured more than anyone should expect, and yet, with the love of her husband and four children, she continues to serve her people with dedication and hope for a better future.
Ratiba is expecting another child. A baby boy. She plans on raising this one to be a doctor.
She will teach him, she says, so that one day he will help the people of Sudan.
